This course is tailored with an intensive 4-week program delivered entirely on-site to provide hands on practical training. The course combines classroom theory with extensive practical sessions, ensuring students gain direct experience in animal healthcare of small animals & pets. This immersive approach prepares participants to effectively assist veterinarians and address animal health needs.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate from PetExpert. This certificate validates the skills acquired through the Veterinary clinical assistant short term certificate course and supports empowering individuals to deliver efficient and compassionate care that ensures the well being of pets.

Week 1 ?
  • Introduction to veterinary nursing care.
  • Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology of dogs and cats.
  • Introduction to Dog and Cat species.
  • Classification of bones, joints, muscles.
  • Introduction to circulatory and nervous systems.
  • Anatomy of important organs – respiratory and digestive system.
  • Musculo-skeletal, urinary and genital system, and skin.
  • Ethics of the profession.
  • Communication and communication skills.
  • Understanding laws related to animal care.
  • Animal Behaviour.
  • Practical nursing skills.
  • Recording of body temperature, pulse and respiration in different species.
  • Blood analysis, anticoagulants and blood biochemistry.
  • Processing of faecal sample, skin scrapings and urine.
Week 2 ?
  • Pharmaceutical Prep: Basics of compounding, pharmacy, and drug preparation.
  • Drug Sources & Terminology: Origin of drugs, key pharmacological terms.
  • Prescription Handling: Reading and dispensing — mixtures, ointments, liniments, emulsions, powders, etc.
  • Sterilization: Methods and techniques used.
  • Culture Media: Ingredients and types for bacterial & fungal cultures.
  • Tissue Culture: Fundamentals.
  • Stains & Diagnostics: Common stains/dyes, antigens, antibodies, and sero-diagnostic techniques.
  • Slide Preparation: Techniques for permanent slide and museum specimen prep.
  • Practicals
  • Health Concepts: Definitions of health, disease, and symptoms.
  • Clinical Examination: General, physical, and clinical exams of animals.
  • Case History: Importance of collecting and analyzing patient history.
Week 3 ?
  • General surgical conditions.
  • Antiseptics and disinfectants.
  • Pre-operative preparations.
  • Post-surgical care – wound dressing.
  • Dressing materials.
  • First aid in fractures.
  • Identification of instruments – sterilization of equipment.
  • Handling and restraining of animals.
  • Identification of clinical emergencies.
  • Common laboratory analytical methods.
  • Common equipment for laboratory analysis.
  • Guidelines in handling chemicals and equipment.
  • Sampling and sample preparation for chemical analysis.
  • Preparation of normal and standard solutions.
  • Disposal of laboratory wastes.
Week 4 ?
  • Veterinary Biologicals: Importance, vaccine handling, storage, shelf life, antivenins, precautions with live vaccines.
  • Breed ID: Identification of common dog breeds.
  • Hospital Exposure.
  • Restraining and examining pets.
  • History taking, vital signs, symptom observation.
  • Oral & parenteral medication.
  • Waste Disposal: Safe disposal of biological waste, sharps, gloves, plastics, etc.
  • First Aid & Specimens: Emergency care, specimen collection & dispatch.
  • Records & Assistance: Maintaining hospital records, assisting in minor surgeries & gynaecological cases.
  • Ward & Patient Care: Isolation ward and kennel management.
  • Inpatient care, deworming, anti-tick treatments.
  • Bathing and grooming of animals.
